You won't feel a thing when the surgery is done. You don't even have to watch, and in fact will probably feel a lot better if you lay back and chill. The most common way to kill the portion of the nail matrix is chemically, not electrically. It won't hurt either- as the doctor will have deadened feeling to your toe before. They will remove the ingrown portion of the nail first, to expose the matrix behind the cuticle. You really don't want a description of how that is done, and I won't get into it. But it's not painful when it happens. Afterwards, you will feel like your toe is about five times the normal size, and you won't be able to wear a shoe for a while. Usually about a week, before you will wear closed toe shoes. The medication used to deaden your toe is similar to what the dentist uses, and will take a least an hour or so to wear off. At that point, you will feel some pain. How much really depends on your personal pain tolerance, but it's going to throb. Best advice is to go home and sit down, with the foot propped up to chest level. They will probably give you something for the pain, although usually if you stay off the foot and keep it propped up, Motrin is usually enough. The first three days or so are the hardest, and you will usually bang the toe at least once to remind yourself how bad a toe can scream. By day five it usually is toughened enough for walking to be easy, and unless you mess with it, or bang it, it won't complain much at all. Your toe won't be pretty to look at for at least a week or so, and you won't be doing any swimming until it heals over well. Don't do it either- or you will regret it. Just follow the directions your doctor gives you and things will be fine. Yeah, it hurts for a few days- but it's not anything you can't survive. It will just be a reminder that little things like toes can really complain loud too.
