Vicks may help, but you probably need an anti-fungal cream and/or powder. You can use lotrimin AF cream or any other similar anti-fungal product. You can order Zeasorb-AF powder through your drug store, if they don't carry it on the shelves. Or you can use yogurt. Eat plain yogurt about 3 times a week, and/or use it like a cream on the area. It will smell, but the acidophilus bacteria in the yogurt neutralizes yeast. It can take up to 6 months to clear. Keep doing what you are doing until the nail is normal.
This is also the same fungus that results in jock itch, athlete's foot, vaginitis (in women), ringworm and other skin rashes. It is the Candida Albicans fungus (yeast). While toenail fungus is not contagious, person to person, it can spread to other toes, if unchecked.
The underlying fungus can be transmitted by skin contact to other persons.

Tea Tree Oil is supposed to be a good antifungal if you are looking for a homeopathic remedy.
It is my understanding that Lamasil, the prescription medication is very hard on kidneys and liver. I have also heard that the fungus reappears as soon as the medication is stopped. and it is very expensive. So the choices for me are to use the Tea Tree oil or live with it.
Go to local store and look in foot care section for anti fungal remedies. It will cure it temporally you might need to get a lamasil prescription to get to the root of the problem.
