Once you get toenail fungus it's very hard to get rid of it. Even if you have the toenail removed and let the nail grow back you still have a good chance of the fungus returning. The fungus is a type of mold that is very hard to cure because it's not only under the nail but within the nail. You may carry this mold on other nails and still not see it affecting those nails yet so as the removed nail grows back it could restart the fungus growth again. This mold can also spread to the other foot and even the nails on your hands but this is rare. There is no one perfect cure for nail fungus as none of them are perfectly effective. Stay away from the pill-form medicines that became popular about ten years ago as they can be very harmful to your liver. This was a main warning from my doctor when I asked about it. He said he would be glad to prescribe the medicine but that he always cautions his patients about this big side effect and that such a risk isn't worth the payoff of making a better looking nail...and that's IF it works. I've had lots of problems with my big toenails getting ingrown so I finally elected to have them permanently removed. By doing this I'll also never have the fungus problem on those nails either-a nice bennie! I just have to continue good foot and nail hygene to that I don't get it on any of my smaller nails which will always be a possibility. So far so good though.

Definitely, as long as the ''root'' of the nail isn't damaged in the process. I had a few genetically inhereted discomforts which caused the nails on my great toes to grow into the skin, whereof I had to remove one and the half of the other (both grew back).

No, getting rid of the nail won't cure it for sure. It's really hard to cure - you need to treat the fungus with some kind of medication.
