I’m just not sure what I should do. I have extremely bad pain and tingling in my feet (imagine the tingling you get when you accidentaly cut of the circulation to a limb in your sleep but it lasts all day). My doc started me on Lyrica, but it’s not seeming to help at all. What should I do?
For the pain, which your so called (DOCTOR)should have treated first. TRAMADOL is a non addictive opiate. Works great. I take 3 at 5 pm . Then I sleep well all nite. I buy them a thousand at a time.
Usually you have this problem for life.

Diabetic Neuropathy is nerve damage caused by diabetes. People with diabetes usually have high blood sugar which over times causes never damage. Exercise has been shown to help control the pain associated with diabetic neuropathy. Here are some exercises you can do to help ease the pain and discomfort and therefore manage your symptoms.
Step 1
Try low impact exercises. This includes swimming, cycling, and yoga. Water can help support your muscles and bones making exercising more comfortable. Cycling is good exercise you can do inside or outside. Yoga is great for the mind and body.
Step 2
Try to exercise 30 minutes a day for five days a week. Stretch well before you start exercising then build up slowly over time. Start by taking short walks or even working more around the house.
Step 3
Find a friend to exercise with. This will help make it social and fun. In the long run, it is easier to stick with an exercise routine when you have help.
Step 4
Try taking lessons in a sport you have never done or something you enjoy. This could be golf, swimming, or ballroom dancing. Any movement will help circulation and blood flow.

How to Treat Diabetic Neuropathy Naturally
Article Rating: (2 Ratings)
One of the primary forms of treatment for neuropathy are tricyclic antidepressant medications. Although effective, there medications may have side effects which make them difficult for some people to tolerate. This raises the question as to whether there are alternative treatments for diabetic neuropathy. Fortunately, there are some natural supplements that have shown promise for treating this condition. Here are some that have been shown to have some positive benefit.
Step 1
Alpha Lipoic Acid.
This is an anti-oxidant that can be purchased in capsular form at most vitamin stores. It has been approved for use in neuropathy therapy in Germany due to its reported ability to improve blood flow to nerves. At least fifteen studies using an injected form of alpha lipoic acid or ALA have demonstrated improvement in the pain and burning associated with diabetic neuropathy. Side effects were mild, including headache and vague gastrointestinal symptoms. The problem with this particular treatment is that alpha lipoic acid is only available in pill form in the United States whereas these studies used an injectable form at high doses. It’s unclear whether the oral form of ALA taken at a lower dose would have the same beneficial effects. Alpha lipoic acid is also known to be a chelating agent which means it may lower mineral levels in the body. Iron levels should be followed closely when ALA is used.
Step 2
Capsaicin.
You may have already heard about the potential health benefits of capsaicin which is being studied for its potential to prevent and treat symptoms of indigestion, arthritis, and even as a cancer preventative. Capsaicin is found in high quantities in chili peppers. It’s currently being investigated for use as a topical agent for treatment of diabetic neuropathy. A recent study compared the effects of capsaicin vs. tricyclic antidepressant medications for neuropathy therapy. After two months, the pain improved equally in both groups with fewer side effects experienced by the group taking the capsaicin. Since capsaicin is applied topically to the affected areas, the biggest complaint was burning at the site of application. A capsaicin preparation can be purchased without a prescription but needs to be used at the highest strength twice daily to achieve results.
Step 3
Evening Primrose Oil.
This is another natural supplement that has been investigated in the past for possible treatment of fibrocystic breast disease and menopausal symptoms in women. It’s a rich source of omega-6 fatty acids which make up the myelin sheath of nerves. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. Several studies have shown that supplementation with evening primrose oil reduced the symptoms of diabetic neuropathy with minimal side effects. The drawback is that supplementation needs to occur for six to twelve months before results are seen and may require up to ten 500 mg. capsules per day. It should be avoided by anyone taking antiplatelet or anticoagulant medications since it has anti-platelet activity.
1st, you must get your blood sugars into the normal range as much as possible.
You will need to take multivitamins and a supplement called Alpha Lipoic Acid.
Some pain relievers can help, but if you are lucky, you can recover from much of the pain if you keep to the above. But it will take time to heal some of the damage.
If the pain gets intolerable, they can inject methanol to kill the nerves, but you are numb PERMANENTLY.
You could also try acupressure. This can effectively put the nerves to sleep temporarily.
ARE you diabetic? if so, then CONTROL YOUR BLOOD SUGARS! The consistently high blood sugars are causing the problem. The pain will NOT go away until you get your blood sugar into the normal range most of the time.
Nerve damage takes a LONG time to heal. You need to have normal blood sugars for 4-6 MONTHS before you will see a reduction in the pain. But long-term control of blood sugars is what diabetes control is all about.
In the mean time, try CAPSACIN CREME. This is available at most drug stores, and does NOT need a prescription.
CAPSACIN is the chemical that make jalapenos hot. But for some reason, when rubbed =on the skin it reduces the pain of neuropathy.
But don’t just cover the problem — FIX IT! Get your blood sugars under control, and the pain will eventually go away.
My mom had the same problem with DPN (diabetic peripheral neuropathy) Try and increase you Vit. B6 as high as 250mg a day. Also alpha lipoic acid show 65% reduction in symptoms.
I have included some web site to better help you. Also you don’t have to worry about side effects of medications or if it will interact with any other medicine you may be taking. Good luck
Lyrica may not work for you. Ask your Doc if you can try Neurontin (Gabapentin). I take 600mg of that 3x a day and have no probs with neuropathy, Without it, I am in tears because my feet hurt so bad. Good luck!! I empathize with your neuropathy, it is painful, I know.
I was told by a physician that taking a Super B-Complex vitamin once a day, with a B6 vitamin once a day- helps repair nerve damage. I took those for awhile too- my neuropathy has improved.
Research the Neurontin and the Viramins online, see what you think. Good luck.
