I know you have to have pins put in and im fine with that but im scared to have them removed!! is it really painful to have them removed? I am not sure if I am willing to go through the surgery if i hav to have pins taken out! i mean its just a toe that looks different! but I have heard some people say it doesnt hurt to have the pins taken out and some people say it does hurt. let me know! thanks!
Maddison, if you are willing to undergo the surgery then I wouldn’t worry about the simple removal of the pins. The procedure in most cases is unremarkable and people fret about it and then say it was really nothing. Your doctor has done many of these and knows the best way to perform this. If it upsets you don’t look or ask that a shield be put up so that you cannot see it occurring. I am sure that what you should be focusing is on what that new look is going to do for you when you get shoes!
Please don’t back out of your surgery because of the pins. You toe will only get worse with time and can cause you major problems. The pins are necessary so that the toe will heal correctly.
If you have ever had stitches you know how it feels to have them removed. Removal of the pins is no worse than having stitches removed. I work for a podiatrist who does many hammertoe surgeries, I have never had a patient complain about the removal of the pins.
Good luck to you and be sure to follow your doctor’s instructions for the best proper healing.
Why are you having the surgery? Is it painful, or just the looks? You must remember, when you have surgery there is no turning back. I have worked with people who have had this procedure only to regret it and others who were successful. The point is it is a surgery and should not be taken lightly. once you do it there is no turning back. I usually advise people to try every alternative before surgery unless there is some pressing issue to support surgery. Some who have had the procedure ended up with a frozen toe with no flexibility. Others were fine. You have to decide if your reasons for surgery are justified and worth what ever the risks are. Second, has anyone told you why you have the hammertoe? If not don’t you think it is likely that whatever it was you will continue to do it which means you can get hammertoe again? You must be prepared and informed in order to make a good decision about surgery.
