In my practice exercise after bunion surgery is often a frustrating issue. Because the bone is surgically broken and repaired, it's difficult to allow weight bearing exercise, such as treadmill, elliptical, or even stationary bike, for at least 8 weeks after surgery. After the incision is healed, and with your surgeon's approval, swimming should be okay. In terms of strength training, upper body work is good as long as you're seated for it. in the end, it will be worthwhile, since you'll be wearing shoes much more comfortably. Be sure, however, that your podiatrist makes you some custom orthotics after the surgery to prevent the bunions from coming back!
Good luck.
